With collective executive experience totaling in excess of 100 years, there are few healthcare issues our team has not dealt with. Our Maine origins and extensive knowledge of the state’s healthcare needs focuses our commitment to long-term, sustainable healthcare solutions for Mainers.
Wanda J. Pelkey
Chief Executive Officer
Wanda Pelkey, CPA, brings over 30 years of experience in long-term care finance and operations, with a proven track record of navigating complex Medicaid and Medicare-driven reimbursement environments.
As CEO, Wanda is focused on First Atlantic’s commitment to serving people. On quality care and services to our residents, rewarding careers for our employees and being an essential healthcare partner in the communities we serve. Having served as Chief Financial Officer of First Atlantic Healthcare for over two decades prior to becoming CEO, she offers deep institutional knowledge and a disciplined approach to financial and operational performance.
She is a high honors graduate from the University of Southern Maine. Prior to joining First Atlantic, Wanda worked at BerryDunn in its healthcare advisory and audit practice, guiding providers on reimbursement and regulatory matters.
She currently serves on the Maine Health Care Association Board of Directors, including two terms as Board Chair, and participates in national leadership initiatives through the American Health Care Association’s Regional Multi-Facility, Independent Owner and Not-for-Profit Council.
Wanda resides in New Gloucester, Maine, and maintains an active lifestyle, enjoying outdoor recreation and time with her family.
Andrea Otis-Higgins
Chief Operating Officer
Andrea Otis-Higgins, MBA, RN, RAC-MT, CHC, MLNHA, is Chief Operating Officer of First Atlantic HealthCare, a role she has held since 2015. She previously served as CEO of a non-profit post-acute care provider, Corporate Director of Clinical Services, Corporate Privacy Officer, and Manager of Clinical Operations for a large, multi-state healthcare provider. A recognized educator in the field, Andrea has taught extensively on the CMS Minimum Data Set (MDS), Medicare, Quality Measures, the 5-Star Rating program, and quality improvement and leadership.
Licensed as a Multi-Level Nursing Home Administrator in Maine, Andrea holds an MBA in quality and leadership, a Certificate of Graduate Study in Nursing Education, and a health care compliance certification. She serves on AHCA’s MDS Focus Group, MHCA’s Education Committee and Business Services Board, and the Board of Corporators for Hospice of Southern Maine, and she chairs Maine’s Nursing Home Administrators Licensing Board.
Kimberly Bernard
Chief Financial Officer
Kim Bernard is the Chief Financial Officer at First Atlantic Healthcare, where she provides strategic leadership and oversees all financial and accounting functions to drive the company’s financial growth.
Kim graduated with Bachelors in Accounting from Bryant University in 2007. An internship at BerryDunn, CPAs in Portland, ME started her career as an auditor there, with a focus on healthcare organizations, cost reporting and employee benefit audits. Looking to join the private sector, in 2012 Kim joined First Atlantic Healthcare as the Budget and Reimbursement Manager. In this role Kim was responsible for all budgeting and cost reporting aspects of the owned and managed nursing home and assisted living facilities. In 2019, Kim was promoted to Director of Accounting where she supervised a team of ten in the daily operations of accounts payable, cash management, financial statement prep, budgeting and cost reporting. Excelling at that role, in 2024 Kim was promoted to CFO. Additionally, Kim serves on the First Atlantic Corporate Compliance Committee, is trustee of the company’s 401k plan and is currently on the board of trustees of the Maine Health Care Workers Comp Trust.
Kim resides in Falmouth, ME with her husband and two daughters. When not at work, you’ll find her cheering on her girl’s activities, cruising Little Sebago Lake or bombing down ski slopes!
Christine Riendeau
VP, Human Resources
With over 25 years of experience in human resources within the healthcare sector, Chris brings a wealth of expertise in aligning workforce strategies with business goals to drive organizational success.
Holding a Master’s in Business Administration, Christine has developed a robust skill set that spans business strategy utilizing knowledge in workforce analytics, benefits, compensation, employee relations, recruitment, and payroll management.
Throughout her career, she has been passionate about the human side of business, understanding that the most valuable asset of any organization is its people. They have consistently leveraged this insight to bring ideas and strategies to the table that enhance employee engagement, optimize talent management, and advance organizational performance.
In addition to a successful career in human resources, Chris has contributed to the field by serving on several professional boards focused on human resources and healthcare. These roles have allowed them to stay at the forefront of industry trends, continuously refining their approach to HR challenges and opportunities.
Kenneth W. Bowden
Owner, Director
Mr. Bowden joined the company in 1990. Bowden leads a very talented executive team that carries out company objectives related to management, consulting, development, advocacy and regulatory compliance.
A graduate of Ellsworth High School, he continued his education at the University of Maine at Orono, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and an MBA. Once employed by the world-wide public accounting firm of Ernst & Whinney, many of his audit clients were from the health care field including St. Mary’s General Hospital, Penobscot Bay Medical Center and Northern Maine Medical Center to name a few.
Bowden has held many healthcare executive positions including Cost and Reimbursement Manager at St. Mary’s General Hospital and was the first Chief Financial Officer at Jackson Brook Institute, a newly opened Psychiatric/Drug Rehabilitation Hospital located in South Portland, Maine. In 1990, he joined First Atlantic Corporation as Chief Financial Officer where his duties included financial oversight of the nursing, pharmacy and home health divisions. Promoted to Chief Executive Officer in 1995, Mr. Bowden has been involved with health care services for more than 40 years.
Craig G. Coffin
Owner, Director
Mr. Coffin is the company’s Chief Development Officer and son of the company’s founder, Ronald C. Coffin.
A licensed Nursing Facility Administrator in Maine and Florida, Mr. Coffin began working in the field of geriatric healthcare in 1985. In 1995 he became Chief Operating Officer where his responsibilities included oversight of company-wide operations and development activities of the company.
With extensive growth in the last decade, Craig moved from overseeing operations and running development opportunities to focusing solely on company growth as Chief Development Officer in 2014. He was instrumental in the development and construction of Ross Manor, Bangor, Maine, and Atlantic Heights in Saco, Maine.
Born in Massachusetts and educated at Proctor Academy, Dean College and the Florida State College of Healthcare for his AIT program, he has for nearly 30 years, been involved with the provision, direction and management of healthcare to the elderly.
Coffin’s expertise includes project managment, vendor selection and monitoring, operation analysis, acquisition analysis and due diligence.
